april 22, 1889...

do you know why this day is important in oklahoma history?  it is when the land run happened...50,000 people lined up to race for their chance at 160 acres.  11,000 parcels of land were claimed.

our homeschool group did a reenactment today and our kids were SO excited.  they made a covered wagon with the help of their papa and they chose to pack blue metal dishes, a mcguffy's reader, chalkboards, guns, seeds, a pet raccoon, water, a lantern, cookware etc.  and...they won first prize for the best settlement! trooper won best prize in cowboy costume...although to him it's not a costume, just every day attire...grin.

it is so important to learn about your state's history but even more important to make it fun for kids!  and yes, they even did a little friendly claim jumping!

  1. How neat ~ what fun it was for the kids. How are you feeling?

  2. That sounds like so much fun!! I think I would be right in there running around hehe ~Love Heather

  3. I love how the cowboy attire is Trooper's everyday. :-D
I hope you're feeling well! Waiting to hear about this baby!!

  4. The gun tucked safely in is classic boy! Love it!
