the great central U.S. shakeout

today is the day where 2.4 million people* practice what to do if there is an earthquake.  it's not something we think about too often in these parts in my opinion but i whole heartily believe in being prepared.  i've noticed when the kids are prepped in advance then they are less likely to freeze or become scared in a stressful situation.

what is recommended to do in case of an earthquake?  "drop, cover and hold on!"  the oklahoma medical reserve corps says to:

  • DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
  • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
  • HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.

If there isn’t a table or desk near you, drop to the ground in an inside corner of the building and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Do not try to run to another room just to get under a table.

there are other shakeouts across the United States and worldwide.  click here** to find one in your area.

today would also be a good day to go over fire escape plans, check fire alarms, check go bags and anything else you can think of!  =)
